Buying all day. Price going nowhere.

Under the Price EditorialUpdated 2 min read
THE SHORT ANSWERES cumulative delta climbed throughout the day while price stayed weak. When delta finally turned down, price broke lower twice. We want to keep watching for sessions where heavy buying fails to produce higher prices.
MAXIMUM MOVE SHOWNFirst decline: about 16 ES points (0.21%). Second decline: about 16 ES points (0.21%).

What stood out?

The six-session chart makes September 8 easy to spot. Cumulative delta rises far more than it did on the surrounding days, but ES remains weak.

The important clue was the mismatch: buyers kept pressing, yet price could not move higher.

What happened next?

In the first shaded area, cumulative delta turns down and price drops with it. Delta then recovers to new highs, but price stays in a lower range.

At the second shaded area, delta rolls over again and price breaks lower a second time.

Why was it interesting?

This is the kind of session where cumulative delta becomes more useful than usual. The buying pressure was obvious, but it was not producing the expected result.

That can be a sign of absorption. When the buying finally weakened, price had room to move lower.

What should we watch next time?

Watch for unusually strong cumulative delta paired with a market that cannot rise. If delta then turns down with price, the character of the session may be changing.

We will keep collecting these days, including the ones where price eventually catches up and moves higher.
